Sader in a Report on "Elaph" Website

Piracy has Become an Organized Crime

In a report written by Ruba Abou Amo on Elaph website, entitled "The Aspects of Piracy in Lebanon", broaching the daily fact endured by Lebanon due to the rife acts of piracy, the Managing Partner of Sader and Associates, Attorney Rany Sader, stressed the importance of establishing courts specialized in hearing cases of intellectual property on which the world economy is based nowadays, a fact that is clearly shown in the allocation of a large part of the budget of some countries such as the Unites States of America, Japan, and Germany to this matter.

According to Sader, the intellectual property is divided into commercial and industrial property - which includes trademarks, industrial rights and geographical indications -, the author's right and the adjacent rights. Sader says that some citizens, such as the authors and publishers, cancel their relation to the intellectual property for they think that they are not directly involved with it. He adds: "With the permanent existence of consumers, the laws of protection of intellectual property are basically built to protect these consumers and shield them from any harm." He sheds the light on what is called today "the organized crime", since the analyst nowadays deem that the crimes of piracy and imitation are linked to terrorism, money laundering and drug dealing, while numerous persons, on the other hand, switched from the dangerous crime of dealing in drugs to dealing in imitated goods, thus evading a sanction that may reach the capital punishment, whereas the perpetrator of intellectual property offenses is tried for perpetrating a misdemeanor.

The author owns his idea upon its execution, since the idea itself is unprotected, whereas the marks of identification, trademarks and inventions are registered in the Ministry of Economy in order to be owned by their owner.

In summary, Sader words are conveying the message that citizens are being robbed. "There is a mafia conniving to deceive the consumers who are oblivious to the fact that they are being robbed by smuggling dealers, causing an enormous economic damage to the companies and to the State."

However, when hearing the fact that students for instance cannot purchase original CDs, Sader was at first surprised, then added that there are attempts to compel companies to offer their entertainment products for a special price. On the other hand, coordination is underway with the Ministry of Education and the universities in order to provide books for a lower price, thus depriving the students of their alibi.
